Sooooo I've managed to get the lovely Simon from Halu to actually make a t-shirt out of one of my designs. Amazing! Yellow is definitely my favourite and he just looks so cute don't you think?

He was requested by Simon himself, which made the first choice easy enough, but what shall I put on my next t-shirt? A design I have done already? Or create a new one?

I decided I was going to walk to work this morning and on my way (just in Digbeth) I saw these cute little ducks. Anyone that knows me, knows I just love ducks, and so they really made me smile. I tried searching for the artist, and all I could find was this (click for PTP's flickr)

I've been watching a lot on the telly about street art recently and it's got me thinking, maybe I should produce some stickers? I mean it's less damaging than spraying my name all over a wall, and it may get more people looking at my work, or just inspire other illustrators.

Obviously I would of wanted to create ducks, but maybe I'll create some monsters instead? Hmmm...

Mini mini mini mini mini

So recently I've been going to some Mini shows, and at each one, there's so many pieces of art work for sale. But this stuff is so easy and simple to make, so I thought I'd make my own. For the model, I've used a photo of a Mini that I took myself and had a little play on Photoshop.

The Mini belongs to my boyfriend, and I thought about making some art for him. Not only can he have whatever colour and style he wants, it's his own Mini! I would love to be able to do this for customers at Mini (or other car) shows. I absolutely love the pop-art look!

Decorating my room

Yes they are finally completed. 3 little typography beauties to go on my bedroom wall. They are made from torn pages from old magazines such as Dazed and Confused, and Elle and a newspaper. And then, drawn on top in a mixture of black ink and black permanent ink (as some pages were paper, and some were glossy) are the 3 letters that spell out my name. I couldn't think what else to write! I am looking forward to hanging these. I'm nearly running out of space in bedroom for all of this art work now.

I found in Primark (of all places!) some ultra-cool tea towels. How amazing are these?! Yes, they are going on the wall too. Ideally I'd like to frame them, but at the moment, they are just hanging nicely.

So I've been asked to show what my character skills are like. And here they are. My characters are quite simple, yet very colourful. They start out by a simple drawing in my notepad, and then I trace and fill on Illustrator. That is is really. Here is the process!

Yes! You heard me right! Recently, I signed up to Swap-Bot and agreed to write a letter and send a tea bag to two complete strangers. Weird? Yes, but also a good way of being creative and getting in touch with people I probably would never of thought of writing to. And yes, WRITING! Actually picking up a pen and writing, and sending via the lovely postal system. I love post. I wish I could receive more post. Instead, it's all emails, and blogging, and tweeting. Don't get me wrong, I love the instant messaging service as it does make stuff a lot easier, but sometimes it's just nice to wake up and find a letter through the post. And there;s the joy of opening it over breakfast, and holding it in your hands. Anyway, here is what I received this morning, from the lovely Fawn, from Colorado Springs. Wow! Who would of thought that this was so close to where I lived? I thought that apart from my local park, the city was a massive industrial place where nothing natural really grew. I was wrong. It's not often that I can say I like a car advert. But this one really stood out. The smaller print one itself isn't too great - yeah the typography bit is pretty good, but that's about it. However, the billboard really is something else. I've always thought that that billboards needed to be updated and come more alive. This one actually made my head turn when I rode past which I can honestly say doesn't happen often in advertising.

BA Visual Communications Degree Show at BCU

So last night I went to the opening of this years degree show to have a look around the Visual Communication department. I have to say, there was some pretty amazing stuff! My favourite area within the department was illustration. I thought the way they presented their work was fantastic, I especially love having pieces to pick up and hold, instead of just looking at a poster.

Retro Camera

I know I'm probably a bit late with this, but I've just downloaded an app called Retro Camera, and I love the results it comes out with. From what could be quite a boring photo, comes this fantastic little shot, mixed with vivid colours and 'accidental' mis-haps. I will sure be using this a lot more than my regular camera from now on. And I will be taking a lot more photos in general.

Wedding

I've had to put most work on hold recently to prepare myself for this wedding, but luckily everything went to plan, and as a result, we ended up with some beautiful photographs. I can't take the credits for the photography (as I'm in them!) but I have been editing away to get these photos looking fantastic. The theme for the day was 'a splash of purple' and I tried to capture this in the family shot (above). I'm going to get these printed onto canvas' quite large and they will hopefully make some great post-wedding presents!

Glowing Type

I was just having a look through my USB pen to see what what was taking up all of the space on there as it's nearly full, and I came across this which I had completely forgotten about. I can't even remember if I had finished this, or whether I had planned to add more detail into it. Anyway, I think the effect is quite striking, and could be used with a number of linear drawings as well as typography.

This is something I've never really tried before - drawing in Photoshop. And using a mouse instead of a tablet (because no tablet was available!). After creating various layers in Photoshop, I think I like the simple black and white image the best, however, with a bit more time to play with the colours and contrast, I think I could get a realistic graffiti image on a brick wall. This was really fun and would love to do some more, I just need to find willing volunteers to be photographed!

I've been asked to produce some wedding invitations with lots of swirls and citrus colours, and so this is my starting point. I began looking at some simple vectors that are quite flowery, and putting them together to build up the corners of the invitations. I'm hoping the final piece will be even more summery after I have drawn some birds and found some swirling text to add in.

Well, have a look what I just found in a little font package I was given. It's rather pretty, however, it is missing the lowercase letters, and all of the punctuation, so it isn't really all that useful. I do think in the right location though this would be lovely.

I was asked to create a concept of what a gas site would look like with a davit crane placed in it. It took a while to get the crane right (and I still don't think it looks quite right - but I know nothing about cranes!) but I am very pleased with the background and accessories (so to speak!)

Skateboarding in the Sun

Obviously I wasn't the one skateboarding!

But I did have use of an iPhone4 with a HD video recorder. The videos were made purely for fun, but I decided to screengrab a couple of stills and make something out of them. Here are two examples. The top is layering a couple of shots from the same video, so that the move (I think it's an Ollie?!) can be shown from various stages, and the bottom is similar, but laying the images side-by-side to show progress. I have to say I am very impressed. Now I can't wait until Matt learns some new tricks for me to photograph :)

A nice little app I found

I came across this - a free app called TypeDrawing. The idea is you select the typeface you want to use, and the words (in my case it was Gill Sans / Louise Whitmore) and then using your finger, just draw lines. The faster you move, the bigger the word. It's pretty basic as far as drawing apps go, but for a little free one, with a nice touch of typography, I'm not complaining!

A 2min Photography Walk

Earlier today I was searching through my collection on my junk on the shelf, and found my old SD card (the old one which was taped together) and to my surprise, I managed to read the photos on it.

This was a project I set myself last Easter. The idea... to go for a walk, and every 2 minutes, I would take a photograph of the first thing I saw. No photos were deleted, or re-taken. All-in-all, a hundred photos were taken, and the only thing that stopped me was the fact my camera ran out of battery, and I was lost! Anyway, remembering this is an inspiration to get the camera out and take more photos!

Cartoon desk

A few months ago I started this project which was to cover a desk with little characters. Some of them were from ideas I had in my head, and so they were carefully drawn out in pencil, whereas others went straight on in pen. So far I have just used a permanent marker, but the final piece will be coloured with matt emulsion paint. I look forward to seeing what this looks like when it's finished. It's the first time I've been commissioned to do something like this, so it's exciting!

Completed Wedding Invitations

So this is exciting! The invitations are finished and ready to be bound. Each page was ripped by hand (which took forever!) but was completely worth it. They will be bound with purple ribbon into little booklets, and then sent out to each guest. I'm just on the hunt now for the right coloured purple ribbon...

London Design Festival

A while ago I decided to do a poster for The London Design Festival. The idea was to choose one of the suggested design quotes, and show it in a typographical poster. The catch was that you only had an hour to do it. So this is the quote I chose... GOOD DESIGN IS OBVIOUS, GREAT DESIGN IS TRANSPARENT. The overall piece was only drawn on a4 paper, as it would of taken too long to complete. It was then scanned in and the contrast enhanced to make the words stand out more.

So I've been back at uni today printing some wedding invitations. I have about 20 to make and so I thought letterpress would be a good way to get through them quite fast. The only problem I faced (other than the time it took!) was that there was a limited amount of decent letters. So, I will carry on coming up with other ideas. And finding some nicer coloured inks too!!

As I was walking to work through the Bullring this morning, I heard the joyful sounds of Christmas songs being played and thought 'oh no' as I knew I would be hearing them forever more (or at least for the next few weeks!) But I was delighted to see that Costa have, once again, produced some lovely Christmas cups, and also paper bags. It makes me think that underneath all the tacky decorations, fake snow, bad songs... (I could go on!) there are some lovely things that happen at Christmas, here in the retail world. It's simple, it's classy, and it makes me enjoy Christmas a little bit. Now back to embroidering those Santa Sacks....

I was asked the other day to show I could use Photoshop. So, what better thing to do than to create a picture of my garden, with 7 gnomes? Placement - Some sketchbook work

So I'm approaching the end of my internship with Mudlark, and I thought I'd share some of my work in progress. When I am given a brief I tend to just hit the sketchbook, grab whatever pen/pencil is close and just go for it. It's always interesting to look at the final piece after it's finished and compare it to the first ideas. It's interesting in this case as the final piece actually ended up quite typographical. New Illustration Piece

It's finally done! A total of around 2hours, and 5 felt tip pens, and the image is created. The total size is around 24inches squared. All I have to do now is figure out how to frame it- the hard part!! The piece is done on brown parcel paper, and so some of the pens bled into it slightly, but I still like the effect it has created. I don't like my hand drawn stuff to look too 'perfect', otherwise I might as well do it on illustrator :)

My T.V. inpirations

As part of a project a couple of years ago, I was asked to create a piece based on something that has been a big inspiration in my life. My choice back then was television. (I think music also inspired me, but T.V. seemed a lot easier!)

So here it is, a piece with my name incorporated into various T.V. channel idents. You have to bear in mind that this piece was created about 4 years ago, maybe longer, so the idents have changed since then!

This song 'Words' just came on my iTunes whilst I was tidying my desk, and really inspired me to create a poster using this lyric. The song can be heard here Words - Guillemots. It seems quite ironic that I love this song, as if there were no words, I would unemployed, but I think a great typographical post could be created here. I would love to send it to the band too.

Album artwork for a DJ

My friend Gav, who DJ's at Snobs, asked me to create some artwork for his new CD, which I was more than happy to do, however, I am going to Download Festival TODAY and he asked me a couple of days ago. I've been so busy with the internship recently that I just put it off until all of that work was done, and all of my packing was done . So last night, in the space of a about 2 hours, I created this:

Below is the original sketch after he told me he wanted a dinosaur on the cover. I really didn't know where to start as I have never drawn a dinosaur before, but he seemed to like the 'cuteness' of this little monster. I also used my alphabet letters for the artists name.

Old College Work

Yesterday I FINALLY got my old college work from my sister's ex's house. And there was me thinking it would be amazing to get it back as at the time I thought it was amazing, but it showed me how much I have moved on. I'm not saying the work was bad, but I have definitely improved since 6th form!

One good thing though, it has made me want to improve on the projects I have done. This one for example, I like the concept of leaving one object a certain colour. I know it has been done a million times before, but it makes me want to get Photoshop back out and experiment on some recent photographs.

Placement work - Screenshots

These images show examples of what the game would look like with items 'dropped' onto the map. These items can be good or bad, hence the presents and TNT packages.

Another idea was to have balloons hovering above the stations to show an item is there, but I'm unsure about whether from this distance, the balloons should show if the items are good or bad.

The game is based around the London Underground, and players have an opportunity to leave or place items at certain stations, which when collected, will allow teammates, or opponents to receive or loose points.

Placement Work - Creating Icons

This is my presentation that was put forward to the company today, about the icons that would be used on the website and phone app to show what achievements a player had made.
The final names of the achievements have not been decided on yet, but they seemed pretty pleased with my idea :) The icons are simply little buttons which contain letters corresponding to the achievement title eg. fj=fastest journey

F.A.B.

So this week, I was asked by the president of the Finance, Accounting and Banking Society of Birmingham University to create a logo for them and their society. I immediately thought of money, and percentage signs, and bar charts... until I realized that the name, Finance, Accounting and Banking, could be shortened to F.A.B. and this gave me a whole new bunch of ideas! I wanted something fabulous, something glamorous, and something exciting. And so this was my final idea. Originally I wanted some little percentage signs coming out the top instead of bubbles, but we agreed to a couple of little splashes.

And here's the photo's of the final prints (well, one of!) There's 20 all together. Each one is very slightly different due to the 2 colours mixing slightly, and the paper being placed slightly differently each time- but that's the joy of printing, rather than digital :)

Finally worked out how to do this! I can see me playing around with these colours some more now. I've known on Photoshop how to get this effect, but this is Illustrator. And you can do so much more with it. I have a feeling that this is the beginning of something new for me. Although, I tend to get bored of one thing quickly, and I'm sure I'll move on to do something else very soon!

Screenprinting 'Helvetica is Boring'

I've been in the print room again and have produced a screen based on an old idea I had. I would like to thank Aimee for her help doing this, as although I have done screenprinting before, my mind needed refreshing!! I'm not sure on what colours to use on this yet, I'm thinking something bold like red or blue. But anyway, the screen is made, and I will get the photos up as soon as the prints have been done :)

So... this was actually finished a while ago now, but my lovely camera decided to break and I couldn't take a photo of it :(

Luckily... sellotape is my friend and has brought my camera back to life (temporarily) and so I been using it while it still works...

The piece is currently hung in the living room for all to see. I'm not sure what to do with it really. It will stay there until another home becomes available I think.

You may of noticed that there is still pencil marks on the paper - I guess that just shows that it is real! (or is that me just being lazy??)

I'm falling back in love with Illustrator

I've been getting back into Illustrator again and so been playing around with shapes and the pathfinder tools. There was no real explanation why I chose 'love' or 'hearts'... I guess I was just feeling happy!

A couple of hours on a Sunday night goes to this... 3 black pens later and I'm almost done. I have to get a new pen now though. The only problem now is that a new pen will be too black. I love the shading that can be achieved with pens on their way out!

Hello... yes I'm still here. The last few months I've been working full time across 3 jobs which has given me enough money to pay the rent, with a little extra, but now I'm back to being creative again. I've secured a place on an internship within a games company which is good news, and I've had my working hours cut down a little which I intend to become more creative.

The first project I am going to start on is a re-development of the creative type I did for my final show. The final piece will be my name. Here's the start...

Remembrance

This has been in my mind for a few weeks now, knowing the 11th was coming up, I had thought about doing some illustration involving poppys. It wasn't until I 'heard' the 2 minute silence on the radio that I actually realised what it all meant. So this is a little drawing based on the poppy sat on my desk. Thank you.

Just been playing around with triangles and circles creating a typeface that can be altered. This is still a rough, hence the awful colours! Ideally there will be numerous layers that can be altered. This is just the start!!

My next (not so) mini project is to create an alphabet where each letter is hand drawn and filled with patterns. Each letter will be varied, but all drawn in pencils.

I thought about doing one a day, but there are just some days where I have no time at all, and so I aim to do a couple a week. This is 'A' still in process...

Squares and Rectangles

New typeface I've created... however, I'm not sure on the S and Z. Does they work in context? I think so, but they won't on they're own. Also, at this size, they look a little like circles, but I promise you they are squares, just with rounded edges!

I'm really unsure about the trousers though... if you know me, you'll know I'll be seen in skinny jeans or a skirt. Hmm... Love the hair!!!

I've started experimenting with triangles again, and I want to create a full typeface, but with 2 styles, one nice and clean, and the other quite 'bitty' with pieces missing. These are just some early examples of the letter 'a'.
